NATHAN CLEARY WAS FIRED FOR A SHOCKING TACKLE ON NATHAN BROWN OF PARRAMATTA
Nathan Cleary was deported for a dangerous tackle on Dylan Brown midway through the first half of Penrith’s battle with Parramatta.
With the reigning Prime Minister trailing 12-4 at CommBank Stadium, the New South Wales star tackled five-eight Eels Dylan Brown who had almost stopped.
However, Cleary quickly lost control of the tackle, lifting Brown above his horizontal and throwing him on the grass on his back.
Eels' star escaped the gruesome collision with nothing more than a fright, before gently getting back on her feet. Meanwhile, a minor fight broke out with Parramatta players urging referee Todd Smith to act and Panther captain Isaiah Yeo pleading for clemency.
Cleary seemed visibly concerned when Smith summoned him for a brief conversation and the referee wasted no time expelling him.
‘Put your hands between your legs and you shoved it into the ground. You left,” Smith said as the 24-year-old became the first Penrith player since Travis Burns in 2012 to be kicked out in an NLL premier’s game.
Talking about the Fox League, former Queensland Grand Cooper Cronk said it was “difficult to challenge the decision”.
On Nine, Andrew Johns added, ‘He’s a very bad […] hey [Cleary] puts his hands between his legs when he lifts him.
He puts him in a terrible position.
“I imagine this would be a first for Nathan Cleary. It would be the first time in his career that he would be deported. I still can’t believe what I saw.
The Eels did not waste any time asserting their power play, as Reed Mahoney scored twice in eight minutes to take the lead to 30-4 at the break.
Although Cleary has a clean record for justice, he could face a long suspension if the NRL remains consistent with his desire to eliminate the lifting tackle from the game.
Losing the back half of New South Wales would be a hard blow for the Panthers, who are already missing Jarome Luai, a partner of Cleary’s Blues, due to a knee injury.
The top-ranked Panthers, who are one victory away from the minor prime minister, will face Canberra, Melbourne, and South Sydney over the next three weeks.
