 STUDY MEDICINE IN AUSTRALIA

If you dream of becoming a doctor and studying abroad, then why not do or continue your studies in Australia? Each country has its own university system to train its students to become doctors. Thus, Australia has a special training system for its future doctors. We explain to you how studies work in Australia, and more specifically the path to follow to become a doctor.

Studying Medicine in Australia

There are two types of medical training in Australia:

  • The undergraduate medical curriculum (Programme de médecine de premier cycle), requires an entrance exam, the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). This program usually lasts 6 years and leads to a Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS).
  • Graduate medical curriculum (program de cycle supérieur) which requires the entrance examination of the Graduate Australian Medical School (GAMSAT) entrance test. This program leads to a PhD in Medicine and Surgery (MChD) after 4 years.

The application process is difficult and multi-step.

Requirements to join an Australian faculty

After the baccalaureate (undergraduate program)

If you wish to join an undergraduate program, you must have obtained the Baccalaureate of Science type, validate the ISAT test for international students, and obtained the TOEFL or IELTS (language test).

Indeed, you should know that for any admission to an Australian university, whether it be in medicine or some other course, you must validate a language test. This attests to your ability to take and understand courses in English. Here you will need to have a minimum score of 7 on IELTS.

Next, eligibility is based on your secondary test results and your ISAT test. The ISAT is a computerized MCQ test that assesses a candidate’s intellectual skills and abilities. High school students wishing to enter a medical school should study subjects that provide a solid scientific foundation, but this is not mandatory. However, having a background in chemistry and biology will be a real advantage.

After a graduate program (license)

In the case of PostGraduate studies, equivalencies with your previous training are complex. You will need to provide your transcripts from your undergraduate years. In any case, you will have to validate the GAMSAT, the admission test for the medical graduate. This test includes more than 5 hours of MCQ and writing on the humanities.

The formalities to be carried out and the documents to be provided may vary from one faculty to another. Medical courses are quite complex, so it is advisable to contact the chosen university directly. We also recommend that you visit the GEMSAS website. It’s the organization that facilitates the intake process for some of the medical schools in Australia.
