How much does it cost to study to Australia?

Australia is one of the most popular destinations for study. Each year it welcomes more than 600,000 international students. Studies in Australia require a lot of organization and a fairly substantial budget. In fact, tuition fees and the cost of living are higher than in France. So you have to plan your budget in advance to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Here are all the main expenses to study in Australia and have a unique experience.

School Fees: Largest Budget

If you have already visited the web pages of the establishment of your dreams, you have surely already noticed the necessary budget to cover your school fees. Don’t forget to first check if the chosen course is available for international students. Indeed, the school fees are not the same for Australian and foreign students. You will find your school fees in the ‘International Student Fees’ category.

Other school fees

Add to this the cost of a mandatory English level test when registering in the majority of institutions (except language schools). The test costs about $395 and is valid for 2 years. To this add the preparation fee (language course) if necessary.

You must then add the cost of compulsory health insurance (Overseas Student Health Cover) for the duration of your student visa. This is one of the conditions for obtaining your student visa. You must provide proof of your health coverage when applying for a student visa. It costs about $450 a year. It is generally necessary to add private health insurance in addition to OSHC which covers only basic services.

In addition to all this, you will have to pay for your studies. Here we are thinking of books, photocopies, supplies, etc. Count about $200 to $300 per semester. To reduce this budget, you can buy used books or go to specialized student bookstores that offer better rates. It is also possible to download digital versions of the books you need. You can also borrow them from your school library (usually for a renewable month).

Student visa fees

Your student visa also costs $650 (about €440). Unfortunately, this cost is not included in the school fees of Australian institutions. It is therefore your responsibility and it is up to you to apply for a visa from the immigration services. If you need help in this process, please feel free to consult the following article:

The Department of Home Affairs (Australian Immigration) also has financial requirements that you must meet to obtain a student visa. You must prove your ability to cover your living and return expenses.

Refer to the Student Visa Application Document List Subclass 500 and the Document Checklist Tool for details on what documents to provide to prove your ability to cover your expenses for your stay.

With a student visa, you can study for up to 5 years at a recognized higher education institution.

From registration to obtaining the Student Visa, the budget is already substantial, hence the importance of preparing well in advance before deciding to enroll in an Australian institution.

Fund your studies once in Australia

In Australia, work and education are easily compatible. This allows better budget management to cover your daily expenses. With your student visa, it is possible to work 40h/ 2 weeks, or about 20h per week. You can also work without time limits during school holidays. However, it is impossible to work before the beginning of your school year, it is one of the regulations of the ‘Student Visa’.

It will therefore be necessary to organize your schedule and your free time after/before your study hours in order to find a job. It is quite possible to find a job offering less than 20 hours/week. Casual jobs are very common in Australia. The majority of students turn to cafes, bars, restaurants, fast foods, supermarkets, etc. These jobs are the most flexible with student schedules. It is quite possible to meet your needs and cover a few extras by working only 20 hours a week, everything is a matter of organization!
